Easy Example

An example of an easy cipher is given in the intriguing letter below. In this case, you have to correctly locate your cousin Jim’s belongings. So have a go now.

The Log Cabin
C/O the Dani Tribe
Jungle 20 miles due south of
The Snowy Mountains
Papua New Guinea

August 2003

My Dear Cousin

I am writing to you, because I am seriously ill with Malaria in a jungle in Papua New Guinea and I don’t think that I have a lot of time left. It is a long story on how I have ended up in New Guinea with the Dani Indians, which I won’t bore you with now, except to say that I am on the run from a Hong Kong Triad.

As you are my only close relative, I want to share with you the location of my estate and belongings so that I can die safe in the knowledge that it will all be passed onto you. Also, I now know that all my correspondence is being intercepted by the Triad and copied before being passed on. The Triad are trying to seek clues on the whereabouts of some gold bullion that I took from them last year.

Therefore, I have to write these instructions in a Cipher. The keys to the Cipher will be sent to you in a separate letter, but if the letter should fail to arrive then I am sure that you are clever enough to solve it without any further help.

NYY ZL ZBARL VF VA GUR PERQVG FHVFFR ONAX VA YHPREAR NAQ GUR NPPBHAG AHZORE VF BAR GUERR GJB FRIRA GJB NYFB GUR UVQQRA TBYQ OHYYVBA VF HAQRE GUR SYBBE OBNEQF VA ZL YBAQBA SYNG VA EVPUZBAQ

Good luck and don’t let me down.

All my Love

Jim Halpern

Hint: The cipher is an example of alphabet substitution, as used by Julius Caesar. To crack this code, refer to the Caesar wheel below.
